What a day, what a funeral, what a way to say good bye to Retired Chief H. Cecil Gregory! The men and women of BCFD were able to work with the family in making theirs and Ms. Sophia’s requests fall in place. This was the least we could do over the last few days for a man who had served for 40 years and most likely had Alzheimer’s disease not entered his life he would have remained in an active capacity to this day. To the family thank you for allowing Chief Gregory to serve with us and not be too jealous when he would prefer to be at the fire department for training instead of at home watching tv. Today was a testament to all of the lives he impacted as a “Volunteer In Service.” Attending today in addition to our current and retired local members, where some who have gone on to become firefighters, Lieutenants, Captains and Chiefs at Cary FD, Wake-New Hope FD, Fayettville FD, Sanford FD & Orange County FD (Florida). What a fitting tribute for the ride from the church to the gravesite as Chief Gregory was able to take a final ride on his favorite truck with his five grandsons and one great-grandson 4 of which currently serve as firefighters. The family had wanted a viewing and with COVID restrictions in place the traditional way was not going to be possible, but we were able to work with the funeral home & State of NC health officials in setting up a drive through visitation inside the bays of our firehouse. What an awesome feat to be able to get “Papa Smurf” back into the fire station one last time before he was laid to rest. Great tribute to you Uncle Cecil! I know he meant the world to you and will be missed in many ways. He is what family is all about. Glad you had him!

So very special and fitting for Cecil to be back in his favorite place that he spent so many hours/days for 40 years. I hate I had to miss the wake and funeral. I too care for my Mom fighting the same disease. Thank you sharing these pictures

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce that Mr. Hubert Cecil Gregory, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, June 5, 2020 at Bible Baptist Church, 894 Main Street, Lillington, NC 27546. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Angier, NC. Officiating will be Pastor Dale Wallace and Pastor David Morris.

Mr. Gregory was born on March 28, 1941 in Harnett County to the late Hubert Columbus and Dorothy Matthews Gregory. He was preceded in death by his brother, Buddy Gregory. Mr. Gregory was a farmer and retired from Winn Dixie as a truck driver. He proudly served the Buies Creek Fire Department and retired with 40 years of service. Cecil was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle. He devoted his time to making sure that everyone in his life was taken care of. He spent his adult life serving his family, his church family, and his community. He will always be remembered for all the dedication that he gave to so many different things. He loved to be apart of summer church camp, coaching, watching his kids, grandkids, other locals kids, keeping the fire department yard, church yard or his in-law yard in pristine condition. He was a joy to be around, and had a true heart of gold, which was an example of a lifelong service to others before himself.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Sophia Savage Gregory; children, Kathy Sorrell and husband, Vann of Buies Creek, Dale Gregory and wife, Michelle of Meadow and Erica Tart and husband, Steven of Coats; grandchildren, Joshua Sorrell and wife, Amber, Ethan Sorrell and wife, Caroline, Caleb Gregory and wife, Sydney, Steven Sorrell, Austin Gregory, Rebecca Sorrell, Allyson Tart and Aubrey Tart; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Cayden and Hadley; sisters, Doris Sills of Angier, Hazel Matthews of Erwin, and Karen McLamb of Garner, brother, Donnie Gregory of Hamlet; many nieces and nephews.

A drive through visitation will be held 6:00 PM-8:00 PM, Thursday, June 4, 2020 at the Buies Creek Fire Department. Please take Marshbanks Street and take a right on to Mae Byrd Road and enter the Fire Department. You will be asked to stay in your car and enter through the bay of the department. Please follow the directions once arriving to the department.

Flowers are welcomed; however, memorials may be made to Bible Baptist Church, PO Box 53, Buies Creek, NC 27506 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 5171 Glenwood Ave, Suite, 101, Raleigh, NC 27612.

Cecil was a great guy! Worked with him at Winn Dixie,we had some great times. He was very devoted to his fire dept. Prayers for all!
